The Internal Auditor will, in accordance with the two institutions’ financial regulations, provide, independent, objective assurance and advisory services designed to add value and improve the operations of both institutions. The Internal Auditor will provide all levels of management with periodic, independent and objective appraisals and audits of financial, accounting, operational, administrative and other activities, including identifying possible means of improving accountability, efficiency of operations and economy in the use of resources, internally and externally.

The accounts units of both institutions are responsible for the complete, appropriate, timely and accurate reporting of all transactions of each institution in accordance with international financing reporting standards (IFRS) and financial procedures of both AUST and NMI. They also provide reports that are useful for decision making by the Boards of Trustees and Directors and relevant outside partners.

CS4HS (Computer Science for High School) is an initiative sponsored by Google to promote Computer Science and Computational thinking in high school and AUST participated in the 2012 round.

AUST participated in the 2012-2013 Google Student Ambassador Programme (GSAP) in Sub-Saharan Africa. Two of AUST students, Ufouma Bright Ighoroje (PhD Computer Science) and Kiemute Oyibo (MSc Computer Science), were some of the 50 or so succesful applicants drawn from different institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa. All successful applicants participated in the 4-day Google Students Ambassador Summit in Nairobi, Kenya in June 2012.

Between May 2012 and June 2012 a group of AUST-SHESTCO researchers visited Princeton University. The visit to Princeton University by the AUST-SHESTCO researchers was possible because of the AUST-SHESTCO-Princeton University collaboration sponsored by the World Bank-STEP B project in Nigeria.

The African Univer-sity of Science and Technology signed an MOU with the Directorate of Technical Coop-eration in Africa (DTCA) on the 16th day of May 2012. DTCA was established in rec-ognition of the fact that Techni-cal cooperation is a vital instru-ment for achieving regional economic integration in a rap-idly globalizing world.

The ground breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of the ADB (African Development Bank) hall was held at AUST on the 27th of March 2012,. The ADB hall is one of the components of the “Support to a network of African Institutions of Science and Technology” (SNAIST).

Mr. Bonaventure Mbida-Essama has been announced as the new Vice Presi-dent, finance and administration of AUST. He succeeds Dr. Boubou Cisse, who con-cluded his tenure on the 22nd June 2012.

Bamboo bicycles have been designed and built for men, women, boys and girls as part of the interdisciplinary business and innovation program. The bicycles, which use locally available bamboo for the bicycle frames, are being tested by AUST students’ teams.

Ceramic water filters are being developed for the production of potable water in rural/urban communities. These utilize micro- and nano-porous ceramics in the occlusion of microbes (bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa) from biologically contaminated water.

Bio-electro-mechanical systems (BioMEMS) are being developed for the localized treatment of breast and prostate cancer. The BioMEMS devices use thermosensitive polymer gels to store and release cancer drugs into regions surrounding a tumor.

Magnetite (Fe3O4) and gold nanoparticles are being developed for the early detection and localized treatment of breast and prostate cancer.

Affordable and sustainable building materials are being made from new combinations of earth, natural fibers and granite/stone dust. These have been shown to have better mechanical properties than existing cement-based building materials.

Organic and flexible solar cells are being developed by AUST students (Kehinde Oyewole, Ebenezer Tuffour, Deborah Olalekan, and Joseph Asare) under the supervision of AUST professors (Prof. Wole Soboyejo and Dr. Zebaze Kana).

AUST student (Vitalis Anye Chioh) working with AUST faculty (Prof. Wole Soboyejo and Dr. Zebaze Kana) have develop an improved organic light emitting device (OLED) with the potential to replace existing LEDs. The new device has low turn on voltages that have been engineered through the use of novel charge injection layers and lamination techniques. The devices are currently being tested for their robustness and longevity.

A joint meeting of the AUST and the Regional Initiative in Science and Education (RISE) was held at AUST on the 8th of August, 2012. RISE was represented by Professor Phillip Griffiths (RISE Chair) and Mrs. Arlen Hastings (RISE Executive Director) as well as a RISE-supported team from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. J. O. Borode, Dr. J. A. Omotoyinbo, Dr. K. K. Alanemele and some RISE-supported FUTA graduate students.
